Lock Haven wrestling falls against Rider in MAC action
The Lock Haven men’s wrestling team won four bouts, but it wasn’t enough as the Bald Eagles snapped a nine-game win streak with a 29-12 result at the hands of host Rider in Mid-American Conference action on Friday night. With the result, the Bald Eagles move to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in the MAC, slipping one game behind Rider (10-5, 5-0 MAC) for first place in the Eastern Division.
The loss is just the first since December 19 for Lock Haven, snapping a nine-game win streak.
Rider opened the night with wins in the first four bouts to build a 20-0 advantage.
Lock Haven battled back in the middle weights. At 157, Nick Stampoulos picked up the Bald Eagles’ first win of the night with an 8-3 decision over Gianni Maldonado. Avery Bassett followed with a 9-6 victory at 174, and Sam Gautreau extended the momentum with a 5-1 decision at 184.
The victories for Stampoulos and Bassett move their season totals to a team-high 21 and 20, respectively.
However, Rider secured the dual with a fall at 165 and a decision at 197 before Kade Sottolano closed the night strong for Lock Haven, earning a hard-fought 4-3 decision at heavyweight over Hogan Swenski.
The Bald Eagles are set to host the Lock Haven Open II in Thomas Fieldhouse starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15.
