Lyco men’s hoops pulls away late to down Goucher on road

TOWSON, Md. — A 3-pointer from the left wing by first-year Elisha Slabach broke the last of four ties with 3:24 left, as the Lycoming College men’s basketball team pulled away for a 69-61 Landmark Conference win over Goucher College on Wednesday night, Feb. 4, at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

Slabach, who entered the game after a rebound fell out of bounds to give Lycoming (6-14 overall, 2-11 Landmark) a second chance, slipped a screen and was left wide open when junior Connor Shanahan found him for the 3-pointer, which started the Warriors on a final 11-3 run to close the game.

Senior guard Isaiah Valentine and junior Hayden Pardoe – a Central Mountain graduate – each recorded a double‒double and four Warriors scored in double figures to highlight the night, as Valentine led the Warriors with 13 points, a team‒high 10 rebounds, six assists, and no turnovers in 40 minutes and Pardoe added 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. First‒year guard Noa’Sosa Friedman scored 15 points on 7‒of‒7 shooting and added four rebounds and two assists and junior guard Connor Shanahan contributed 12 points, including two 3-pointers, to go along with six assists.

Senior forward J.J. Beagle – a Williamsport graduate – added nine points and five rebounds, while Slabach finished with five points and five boards.

Lycoming opened the game with a six-point run, scoring on two Friedman layups and a jumper from Beagle before Goucher’s first basket came with 17:35 left in the half. The Warriors extended the lead to 22-8, capped on a fastbreak dunk by Pardoe at 12:55.

Goucher responded with a 23-5 run over the final twelve minutes of the half to take a 31-27 lead into the break. A transition 3-pointer by Shanahan brought Lycoming back within four at the horn.

The Warriors regained control early in the second half with a 12-4 burst featuring a run of nine straight points off layups by Friedman, two by Pardoe and a 3-pointer from Shanahan — to move ahead 39-35. Goucher tied the game at 56 on a 3 pointer from Brian Griffin with 5:21 left, but Slabach’s 3-pointer moments later ignited the Warriors on a seven-point run that was followed by a pair of layups from Friedman.

Lycoming’s defense held Goucher (4-16 overall, 1-12 Landmark) to four free‒throw attempts and forced 12 turnovers, converting them into 13 points. The Warriors also won the battle of the boards, 39-33, and scored 36 points in the paint.

Lycoming hits the road on Saturday for Susquehanna University and a 2 p.m. Landmark Conference tip-off.
