Lewisburg competes on first day of PIAA Class AA swimming championships

LEWISBURG — After winning two District 4 gold medals as a freshman, Lewisburg standout Morgan Shannon found herself competing on the first day of Class AA competition at the PIAA swimming championships at Bucknell on Friday.

The freshman Green Dragon finished the 200 free with a prelim time of 1:57.71, dropping just more than two seconds off her seeded time and reaching the B finals thanks to a 13th-place finish in the morning competition.

Morgan’s brother Colin Shannon, a sophomore, reached the B finals in the 200 free. The Green Dragon shaved roughly one-and-a-half seconds off his seeded time and swam a 1:47.03 to take 13th in the morning competition. He was Lewisburg’s only state qualifier this year. In the B finals, Colin Shannon swam a time of 1:46.87 to take 15th.

Lewisburg senior Emma Hopkinson competed at the state meet for the final time in her career on Friday. Hopkinson competed in the 100 fly and finished 19th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:01.01 after entering with a seeded time of 1:00.50. She just missed out on the B finals by just under a second.

Lewisburg’s girls 200 medley relay team finished 16th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:53.79. That relay team consisted of Jillian Muchler, Claire Graver, Hopkinson and Shannon.

The PIAA Class AA swimming championships resume on Saturday for the fourth and final day of competition.
