A man was rushed to UPMC Williamsport after being shot multiple times on Green Street, just south of Park Avenue, about 3 p.m. Monday, city police Capt. Michael Corter confirmed.
“He was shot four times,” but is expected to survive, Corter told a reporter at the scene.
When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a 22-year-old man lying in the street, believing that he was the victim, it was stated in a news release that the police department issued late Monday afternoon. However, this man “admitted to being the shooter,” police said, adding that he claimed he was injured, but how remained a mystery Monday night, police said. He was not shot, Corter confirmed.
The victim in the shooting, after being shot, made his way into a house on the east side of the street to seek shelter and get medical help, Corter said he was told. Officers were directed to the property, where they found the victim with “multiple gunshot wounds to the legs,” the news release stated.
About 15 minutes later, emergency responders brought the man out of the house in a stair chair, loaded him onto a stretcher, put him in the back of an ambulance and transported him to the nearby hospital.

The man who was found in the street was also taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was in police custody, a detective said. He was medically cleared and discharged about 6:40 p.m. He was awaiting to be arraigned before District Judge Aaron Biichle on multiple assault-related offenses. “The charges are being drawn up right now,” the detective told a reporter outside police headquarters. The suspect’s identity was expected to be released once he is formally charged.
Besides city police and hospital paramedics, several others responded to the shooting, including city firefighters, sheriff deputies and probation-parole officers.
A woman who has lived all her 60-plus years on Green Street heard the gunfire while watching television in her home.
“I grew up here, and we never had anything like this before, never,” the woman, who did not give her name, said.
“I was watching a cop show – ‘Law and Order’. I then heard at least three shots outside,” she added. “I saw some people running down the street,” she said.

Green Street north from Memorial Avenue was closed for a period of time until investigators were done photographing the scene, collecting evidence and having two vehicles towed for processing. One vehicle was owned by the victim while the other was believed to belong to the suspected gunman, police said. There was no information concerning what the motive was behind the violence. “This was believed to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public,” police said in the release.
