Williamsport fire leaves family of four homeless

MATTHEW COURTER/Sun-Gazette

A family of four was left homeless Tuesday night after a two-alarm fire extensively damaged their city home at 1050 High St.

A 12-year-old boy in the house alone safely escaped from his second-floor bedroom by decending a set of stairs and coming out a side door, the Sun-Gazette was told.

Khiara Barone lived in the house with her boyfriend, Kevin Garg, along with her two children, both of whom are minors, according to Garg’s mother, who rushed to the scene shortly after being told of the fire, which broke out about 7:10 p.m.

Firefighters faced heavy fire shooting out the back of the house on the first floor when they arrived on the scene, city Platoon Chief Sherman Heaster said.

Two firefighters donned self-contained breathing apparatus and advanced a hose through the front door.

Soon flames rushed over their heads, but they were not hurt.

Heaster said the bulk of the fire was knocked down between 15 to 20 minutes, but not before the home’s interior sustained considerable amount of heat, smoke and water damage.

Barone and Garg rent the property, Garg’s mother said.

Fire officials said the family had a place to stay. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

City firefighters were assisted by volunteers from Old Lyoming Township, Loyalsock Township, Montoursville and South Williamsport.
