South Williamsport man arrested for allegedly punching police officer
Alan D. Larson, who had made statements indicating he wanted to harm himself, was locked up on assault-related charges after he punched a South Williamsport police officer on Feb. 21, it was alleged in an affidavit.
Officers were called to Larson’s home in the borough at 409 Curtin St., about 12:30 a.m. to check on Larson’s welfare. The 37-year-old man “appeared highly intoxicated. He had had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath,” police said, adding the officers were allowed inside the home to talk with him.
For more than an hour, two officers tried to convince him to get “evaluated” by paramedics at the scene, but in that time he became “increasingly agitated and aggressive,” and walked outside and began yelling at the ambulance crew, police said.
After re-entering his home, he became “physically aggressive” with one of the officers, telling him he was going to punch him, it was alleged in the court document. Even after being warned not to do it, Larson proceeded to punch the officer, police alleged.
“It took substantial physical force to overpower him and secure him in handcuffs,” an officer wrote in the affidavit.
Both officers “sustained minor injuries,” and a pair of eyeglasses worn by one of them was “destroyed,” police said.
Following his arraignment hours later before District Judge Aaron Biichle on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, Larson was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
