Bullfrog’s ‘Le Roar Grrrz’ is highest-rated beer in state
JONATHAN BERGMUELLER/Sun-Gazette Bullfrog Brewery owners (from left) Bob, Alicia and Steve Koch and brewmaster PJ Williams hold bottles of the brews that placed on Beeradvocate’s Top 100 Beers in Pennsylvania list.
A quarter of a century after it found its humble roots in downtown Williamsport, Bullfrog Brewery now boasts the top-rated beer in Pennsylvania, according to a beer review website.
Beeradvocate.com places Bullfrog’s “Le Roar Grrrz,” the unfruited Belgian Sour Beer, at its top ranking, with three of its other drinks clinching spots in the top 100 — and the drink rates highly among other platforms as well.
The regular “Le Roar Grrrz” is followed up by “Le Roar Grrrz Kriek,” in fourth place. The Kriek is a drink aged for a minimum of two years that is re-fermented on sour cherries and is bottle-conditioned with belgian candi sugar for carbonation.
Meanwhile, “Le Roar Grrrz Apricot,” a variation of the Kriek that is brewed along the same process, except using apricots, sits at 25. Finally, “Le Roar Grrrz Aardbei,” brewed similar to the Kriek and apricot except with strawberries, rounds the grouping at 75.
The base beer for the latter three is brewed for two years, before having fruit introduced for a minimum of three months.
The “Le Roar Grrrz” line is influenced by a Belgian original that co-owner Steve Koch experienced abroad. The Bullfrog’s brewers replicated the beverage and “Americanized” it to work in Central Pennsylvania.
Bullfrog’s menu of brews has been in development since around 2005, when Terry Hawbaker, the brewmaster at the time, started brewing on behalf of the Bullfrog. PJ Williams became the current brewmaster in 2014, and has continued to build into the brewing tradition at Bullfrog’s.
When Bob Koch, another owner of the Bullfrog, found out, he said his first reaction was to say “What was that all about?”
Steve Koch, Bob’s son and fellow co-owner, said he first found out about the high rating when someone forwarded him an article from “BroBible” that discussed the top beers in every state.
Meanwhile, Williams said it came as a shock when people began congratulating him on social media — and he did not know why.
“I was glad somebody realized our hard work,” Williams said.
In a rating system that saw 174 submit reviews of “Le Roar Grrrz,” the Bullfrog’s frontman drink secured a score rating of 4.48.
To get there, the Bullfrog’s favorite drink had to compete against around 20,000 other drinks originating from 417 different breweries.
Williams said Bullfrog used to be the only craft brewer in Williamsport. However, during the past 10 years, the craft beer industry has boomed. That being said, being number one comes with a special sense of satisfaction that the Bullfrog is on top of the competition, Williams said.
“It really makes us feel good,” Williams said.
Williams said there are only three people in the Bullfrog’s brewing department, which makes the small team’s achievement even more impressive.
According to Steve Koch, the Bullfrog’s bread-winning “Le Roar Grrrz” ranks third in the top 50 lambic-style beers in the world, as well — and it is 13 in the unfruited category of lambics.
The Bullfrog is celebrating its 25th year of serving food and drinks to the Williamsport community by selling a blended drink to customers. Customers are able to enjoy an unfruited blend of vintages from 2014-2017 in honor of the 25-year anniversary of the Bullfrog, according to Alicia Koch, another co-owner.
“It is an honor to be recognized, and we wanted something to thank the community for its support,” Alicia Koch said.
