Photos and memories
I just sent the photo of the one room schoolhouse in Rose Valley to my sister in Ohio. She reminded me of our mother, Elizabeth Maule, who was the elementary librarian for the Montoursville School District. She would, until these schools closed, travel to them every couple of weeks. She would take boxes of books to the kids and read to them. They would run out to her car, help her carry in the boxes, and rush back to their seats and be quiet, ready for her to read to them. She would often read stories to go with the seasons and holidays, like Halloween.
Mom started in Montoursville in 1954, and retired in 1982. She started the first elementary school libraries in the district, and the middle school library. The first school she taught in is now an apartment building. After her retirement, she volunteered for many years at the Konkle Library. In the closing chapter of her life, she completely revamped the library at Elmcroft Nursing Home, and encouraged libraries around the county to donate large print books to their collection. She started Liz’s Library Club and welcomed speakers to the home on a monthly basis. She also enlisted my wife Donna , my sister Liz, and Librarian friends to come and read stories to the group, and had local historian Don King come and speak about local history.
Your photo sure brought back some great memories for us. Thanks so much!
