Transportation study

I was pleased to see that the comprehensive study on transportation included bicycles used for basic transportation. We at Williamsport Bicycle Recycle help many people who use their bicycle for basic transportation. Many of our roads are designed to make cars feel comfortable driving at speeds that endanger cyclists. Last year one of our volunteers was killed when his bicycle was hit by a car on the hill on Market Street. It is surprising that just a short distance away is confusion corner has few crashes. This may be because drivers know the situation is confusing and so pay closer ...

Absolutely right

Dr. Masse’s comments about Loyalsock Township and the undermining of Coach Waller isn’t surprising to me. What’s really bad though is that it’s so bad in Loyalsock that Dr. Masse has to call it out for what it is. Unfortunately he’s absolutely right! Casey Waller is one of the best coaches in Lycoming County if not the best. There are some real egotistical parents who can damper the experience for the whole team and not just the coach. These parents are selfish and only think of themselves. What’s really funny is if you’ve lived in Loyalsock long enough and have been ...

Technology and learning

I want to applaud Montoursville Area School District School Board member, Sharon Meyer, on her comments in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette’s Friday, May 15, 2026, edition. I wholeheartedly agree with Sharon Meyer’s statement “First off, I don’t know why we have Chromebooks for every single kid in kindergarten and first grade, “I think it’s a great time not to put screens in front of 5-year-olds and 6-year-olds for all the school day.” My agreement with this statement is based on a discussion about reading with a 4th and 5th grader during a family gathering. When inquiring ...

Who holds Trump accountable?

Donald Trump promised to avoid foreign entanglements and improve life for everyday Americans. So why won’t Congressional Republicans push back as he breaks those promises and pursues policies many Americans oppose? An unnecessary and potentially open-ended conflict with Iran risks American lives, strains military readiness, depletes weapons stockpiles, and adds billions to our already staggering national debt. Meanwhile, families struggling with gas, groceries, and healthcare costs are told to accept cuts and sacrifices while huge tax breaks once again flow disproportionately to the ...

Crime: The new government subsidy

“There was a time—not long ago—when we could say with certainty: ‘Crime does not pay.’ That time is over. Under a new Trump Administration “incentive plan,” convicted Jan. 6 defendants could receive payments from a $1.776 billion Justice Department Anti‑Weaponization Fund. The proposal rests on the baseless claim that these individuals were “victimized” by politically motivated federal investigations or prosecutions—despite no evidence supporting such an allegation.. So today, crime doesn’t just pay—our own government is cutting checks to the people who ...

Financial struggles

When asked if Americans’ financial problems would motivate him to make a deal with Iran, Trump responded, “Not even a little bit. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.” Yet, the US had the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015 under Obama which declared Iran couldn’t develop a nuclear weapon in exchange for lifting sanctions. Trump withdrew from that agreement in 2018, partially motivated by a desire to reverse a signature policy of Obama. After ...
