Why punish the honest?

I just read online where an appellate court upheld the Colorado August 1 requirement of a police Permit to Purchase and training course of honest citizens at gun buyer’s expense before an honest citizen can exercise their Second Amendment Right to keep and bear arms. The current gun control laws background checks at $30 each “churns” 20 + million honest gun buyers annually to what good purpose? No criminal attempts to try to pass so they get a friend to be a “straw purchaser” for a gun. Now, after August 1, in Colorado, an honest person must pass a test to exercise their ...

An attack on our most vulnerable species

On July 10, the Trump administration finalized a rule that removes the longstanding regulatory definition of “harm” from the Endangered Species Act. This is the most monstrous attack ever on our nation’s most vulnerable species. For decades, that definition recognized that wildlife can be harmed not only through direct physical violence, but also when habitat destruction prevents animals from feeding, breeding, sheltering, or raising their young. Destroying an animal’s habitat is harm. Removing habitat destruction from the definition of harm will make it easier for reckless ...

Rude behavior

I spent my life teaching my children and now my grandchildren to not be rude and disrespectful. Then I read the newspaper from June 16 and there is a girl at Jersey School graduation (full page) with her tongue sticking out. Turn the page and there she is again. I am sure you could have found many graduates who were being respectful and put their picture in the paper instead. You are idealizing rude behavior. JOHN and SUE HEYLER Nauvoo Submitted by email

Sin and confusion

A recent letter refers to cultures, past and present using mixed gender roles as excuses to butchering and pushing cross-sex hormones on minors. I think it’s evil, ghoulish, and barbaric, even on adults. The greatest known civilization, should mimic people from third world, non-Christian, dark-age-like societies? She mentions WPATH; which is recognized as ‘the authority’ of trans care. The problem: it is a self-promoting, well-funded group of fringe doctors. The growing numbers of detransitioners is telling! Even among young adults which started their surgical transitioning ...

Weasel words

Trump’s political genius has long been to promise people that success was just around the corner. And those same folks never realize the corner rarely comes. I like to call his promises, “Weasel Words”. For example: “largely negotiated” “proceeding nicely” “largely agreed to” “gas prices will come down a lot” “We perhaps have the makings of a deal here” “In a few weeks” “within reach” “Moving Along Well” It might be interesting to keep a tally of these weasel words and see which ones are Trump’s favorite! Options can save lives

Cancer has a way of changing how a family sees time. I have watched people around me struggle with cancer and know how quickly life can become centered around the hope for more time together. It is one reason I believe we should do everything we can to help people catch cancer early, especially cancers that are far more treatable when found before they spread. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a perfect example. And unfortunately, the American Cancer Society estimates that 2,240 Pennsylvanians will die from CRC this year. The problem is that, for too many people, screening has ...
