Local roundup: Canton baseball earns victory

Canton’s offense exploded for 19 hits and scored 16 runs in a 16-7 win against Troy in high school baseball. Cooper Kitchen went 4 for 4 with a double, Joel Schoonover had a double and Weston Bellows added a triple.

Bellows went an impressive 4 for 6 with a game-high five RBIs. Hayden Ward had three hits, as did Hudson Ward.

Hayden Ward threw five innings and struck out five to earn the win.

Wellsboro scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Cowanesque Valley, 16-7, in the conclusion of a previously suspended game.

McGwire Painter went 3 for 4 with two doubles for Cowanesque Valley and Jordan Vargeson and Mike Sipps each had three singles.

Kaeden Mann led Wellsboro with a home run and a single. Cameron Brought had three hits, one of which was a double, and Conner Adams and Darryn Callahan both hit doubles.

Devin Swank doubled and Dylon Pequignot threw 3 2/3 strong innings of relief as Hughesville defeated Mount Carmel, 7-6 in the completion of a suspended game and clinched a District 4 Class AAA playoff berth. Mount Carmel won the fully-played game, 7-2. The Spartans (10-8) are playoff-bound for the 12th time in 13 years. Swank had two RBIs in the win and Clayton Poust, Jackson Bower and Coen Reigner each had hits and RBIs.

• Jersey Shore took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth inning, but Danville responed by scoring two in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and held on for a 2-1 win against the Bulldogs in high school softball.

Jocelyn McCracken threw an excellent game, allowing just one single. Carolyn Wacker went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Grace Lorson led the Bulldogs by hitting a double.

The loss drops Jersey Shore to 7-6.

Montoursville fell to Central Columbia, 5-0. Mea Constentino allowed just two singles pitching for Central Columbia and struck out 16.

Hannah Klotz and MacKenzie Weaver each went 1 fo 3.

Jenna Waring struck out six and allowed just two hits as Montgomery defeated St. John Neumann, 21-0, in three innings. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first inning.

Faith Persing went 2 for 2 and Taylor McRae went 2 for 3. Sheiana Tutler and Juliana Kriner each had a single for the Golden Knights.

Carley Wagner ripped three hits and Lewisburg held off a furious Warrior Run comeback, winning 6-5. The Green Dragons (11-4) won their fifth straight game with Rylee Dyroff and Alexis Walter each delivering two hits. Warrior Run scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within a run.

• Central Mountain introduced Jamie Rauch and Jeffery Bowdell as its new volleyball and girls basketball coaches, respectively. Rauch, an LHU graduate, helped launch the program in the early 2000s. Bowdell was an assistant football coach and coached middle school basketball at Loveland High School in Ohio.

• Local gymnast Maggie Fausnaught of Williamsport, 19, recently became a national medalist at the USAG Level 9 Eastern National championship. Fausnaught placed fourth on vault with a score of 9.65.

The Region 7 teams of both her and her sister Klair Fausnaught, 17, placed first in their respective age groups.

• The Bucknell Varsity Eight pulled away from Boston University over the last 500 meters to secure silver medals and sew up a strong second-place team finish for the Bison at the 2021 Patriot League Championships on Friday on the Cooper River.
