Central Mountain finishes first at PHAC Duals

MILL HALL–There was a different type of energy level walking into Central Mountain’s gym in the Saturday morning and walking out in the afternoon. Collin Bauman helped the Wildcats deliver when he earned a victory by fall to give the Wildcats a 34-27 win to cap off a 3-0 day on their home mat.

The Wildcats put on a spectacular performance once again to solidify a first place finish after defeating Jersey Shore (40-26) and Williamsport (50-18) before ousting the Braves. Bauman arguably stole the show with his 0:31 fall that helped solidify the team win, but this was a solid team effort from all the guys who wrestled up to Bauman’s match that pitched in.

With both teams worn down from the two previous duals–and the Wildcats and Braves being the top two teams–whoever was going to place first had to bring everything they had and then some.

The Wildcats started by dropping the first three bouts in the battle with Shikellamy, but the Wildcats’ experience came back with two victories by fall from Dalton Perry and Luke Simcox. The sophomore and juniors had been setting the tone since the beginning of the season, and they didn’t stop Saturday.

“I wanted to come out and score a lot of points and then work the falls after that,” Perry mentioned. “I feel like it really opened me up and worked well today. In the Shikellamy match I knew we needed bonus points for a win so I had to work pretty hard for it there.”

“I knew I’d have to step up for my team, so it was refreshing to get out of the match early and get six points for my team,” Simcox said.

At 160, Griffin Walizer took advantage and won by fall and started a slew of four Central Mountain Wildcat wins in a row. Wrestling up a couple weight classes is something that Walizer figured he could handle, but it’s tough doing it against one of the team’s best players.

“It’s still the same mindset, I knew what I had to do,” Griffin Walizer said. “I knew I had to take care of business, get as many points for the team as possible and I’m glad I did that. I gave up the first takedown but I knew I had to pick up the pace on him. I just kept attacking and ended up getting a headlock on him.”

Jake Weaver, Rocco Serafini and Dakota McDermott followed Griffin’s lead to keep things close. If it wasn’t for their three wins, the Wildcats may not be in position to take home the first place crown.

Then, in the last match of the afternoon, Collin Bauman sealed the deal for the Wildcats with a fall in 0:31 much to the delight of the Central Mountain crowd. With Bauman’s pin, the Wildcats came away with a 34-27 victory over the Braves.

“It feels good (to get the win),” Bauman said. “I knew I had to step up and if I didn’t it would have been a fighting battle. I’m thankful for that and all the coaches we have and stepping up in practice.”

“There were some real quality matches that took place there (against Shikellamy),” coach Biff Walizer said. “They have a few guys with winning records and we were able to knock a few of those guys off. You have to do that to be able to beat a solid team like Shikellamy.”

The Wildcats began the day with a dual matchup with crosstown foe Jersey Shore. Griffin Walizer, who wrestled at 152, had no problem getting the Wildcats started with a pin in 1:49. Walizer grabbed an 8-3 early lead over Kale Ross and then eventually earned a pin.

Gino Serafini got a nice early two-point takedown to begin his match. At the end of the second period, Gino took a 7-1 lead, and an early takedown gave Gino an eight point lead on his way to a 9-1 major decision victory.

Jake Weaver battled in his match with Tyler Bauder. Although Bauder went ahead 4-0 early, Weaver fought back well and had a two-point takedown to make the score 4-2, but Bauder was able to close out with a 5-2 victory.

Rocco Serafini and Dakota McDermott also lost in their matches, but they both fought well. McDermott went against a strong and feisty Packer who had many takedowns and had control for much of the match. Rocco did a nice job in his 5-0 victory and helped the Wildcats extend their lead.

To finish the first dual off, Brayden Blackwell got a nice 3-point takedown on his way to getting a 5-3 decision victory over VanDruff. The Wildcats gave a solid opening statement of the duals, defeating the Bulldogs 40-26.

Against Williamsport, the Wildcats continued their same attack and showed no letdown in their dual with the Millionaires. Jaggar Pardoe earned a victory by fall in just two minutes, Carnell Noone defeated Team USA Nationalist Marissa Rumsey and Dalton Perry won by fall in 1:27.

Following Perry was Griffin Walizer, who battled Williamsport’s Carter Weaver. Shore’s Weaver was down to show Walizer he could hold his own. But Walizer proved he could indeed hold his own and won 4-3.

As the heavier weights were set to battle, Braylen Corter, Jake Weaver and Rocco Serafini battled their opponents. Corter did a nice job keeping Reed on the mat and dicating the match as he won by tech fall 18-3, Weaver was aggressive from the first whistle and won by fall and Serafini handled business with a fall in 90 seconds.

The Wildcats have put together some great weeks. With a 3-0 performance on Saturday, a dual win at home against Selinsgrove last Thursday and a first place finish at King of the Mountain, the team is starting to shape up heading into the final stretch of the season. It’s important for Central Mountain to keep getting better.

“We pay attention to the things we have to work on,” coach Walizer concluded. “Not all 13 guys won so there are still areas to improve on. There’s always technique to be worked and improved on.”
