Local roundup: Hughesville girls tennis advances to team tournament final
Hughesville got one step closer to claiming a repeat team title in girls tennis as the Spratans defeated Central Columbia in the District 4 semifinals, 3-0, to move to 19-0.
Sarah Buck, just a day removed from winning Hughesville’s first district singles title since 2017, earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brady McNamara at No. 1 singles. Annaka Bruder earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Claudia Brindisi.
Hughesville’s Destini Flowers won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1 against Rihanna Baker.
Hughesville’s doubles matches were stopped after the singles sweep secured the win for the Spartans.
Hughesville will face Jersey Shore — a 3-0 winner over South Williamsport — in a rematch of last year’s district final on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Williamsport High School.
• Owen Sherman scored the game’s go-ahead goal in the 58th minute to put Montgomery ahead late, but South Williamsport scored twice in a 14-minute span to secure the Mounties’ 2-1 win over the Red Raiders.
Evan Ogden tied the game off an assist by Logan Harris before Gavin Gries scored the game-winner in the 77th minute, assisted by Ogden.
South held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Brayden Frei had five saves for the Mounties and Conor Irwin recorded seven for the Red Raiders.
Montoursville’s Gavin Cott scored in the 61st minute to give the Warriors a late one-goal lead, but Athens tied it up a minute later on a goal by Sean Clare. Both teams went into two overtime periods, but weren’t able to put in a game-winner as the two schools ended in a 1-1 draw.
Quinn Winslow assisted on Cott’s goal. Mason Morrow had eight saves to prevent Athens from winning.
Milton’s Ethan Rhodes scored twice and Evan Yoder had two assists and a goal in Milton’s 6-0 win over Warrior Run. Dom Ballo, Aaron Treibley, Ethan Hamilton and Tobin Strous all added goals.
Milton scored four second-half goals.
Lucas Cuneo had a goal and assist to help Wellsboro defeat Hughesville, 3-1. Hughesville scored right before halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1, but a goal midway through the second half helped the Green Hornets seal the win. James Stephens’ scored Hughesville’s lone goal.
• Mackenzie Lopez dished out two assists to help Milton defeat Selinsgrove, 4-1, and in the process reached 50 career assists. The Black Panther, who has 71 career goals, is the first Milton girls player to ever record 50 goals and 50 assists in a career.
“I am so proud of her. It’s not very often you see a soccer player get both 50 goals and 50 assists. It’s usually one or the other,” Milton coach Rod Harris said. “She has been double-teamed all season long and has figured out how to own her role in existence by assisting and finding a way to get her teammates involved.
“She has matured a great deal from a powerful goal scorer to a finessing assist player. It is fun to watch,” Harris added.
Loyalsock lost to Shikellamy, 7-1. Shikellamy scored four first-half goals to take the lead. Jillian Deivert led the Braves with a hat trick en route to her 50th career goal.
Loyalsock’s Lauren O’Malley scored the Lancers’ only goal early in the second half. McKenna Daniels had 17 saves.
Brooke Wilcox scored four goals as North Penn-Mansfield earned its first win of the year by defeating Montgomery, 5-3. Montgomery’s Rubi Solano had a goal and assist.
Midd-West defeated Central Mountain, 2-0, on the Wildcats’ senior night. Central Mountain honored its 11 seniors in Samiah Anderson, Taylor Campbell, Paige Confer, Elise Cygan, Madison Hardy, Lily Hendricks, Danice Kelly, Halle Lodek, Haleigh Peters, Julia Smith and Morgan Temple.
• Lewisburg had an outstanding performance overall at the PHAC Championship meet on Tuesday afternoon as the Lewisburg boys won the team title with a score of 65 and the Lewisburg girls tied for second (90) with Warrior Run.
In boys competition, Lewisburg’s Jonathan Hess ran a 16:07.70, winning by just a second over Danville’s Dane Spahr in a tight race. • Freshman Aidan Stillman scored his first career goal in the 53rd minute to lift the Lycoming College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wilkes to clinch a slot in the Landmark Conference Championship and stay at the top of the conference standings with two games left in the conference slate.
Stillman scored on a through ball into the box from senior Pius Atubire, drilling a shot into the lower left netting to give Lycoming (9-3-4 overall, 6-0-1 Landmark) the lead. Wilkes managed just two shots after that, neither on net, as the Warriors locked down on defense to help senior Nick Wilke earn his ninth shutout of the year, as he made one save on the evening.
Wilkes is now tied for third in program history with Chris Solecki (2018) and Josh Gildea (2015) with the nine shutouts this year, two away from the program record of 11 set by Connor Keenan in 2014.
The Warriors had 10 corners in the game and took 12 shots, with sophomore Thomas Greyer taking two shots on goal.
Bucknell pressed St. Bonaventure for 90 minutes and controlled possession throughout, but the Bison could not find the finishing touch and settled for a 0-0 draw with St. Bonaventure in a non-conference game.
The Bison outshot the Bonnies 17-5 and piled up a whopping 13-2 edge in corner kicks but St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Jules Dechert was up to the task with seven saves, including a couple of point-blank stops.
Bucknell keeper Jake Nicoll made one save, a good one on a hard, low shot Dean Mercer in the 15th minute, and Nicoll earned his first career shutout. St. Bonaventure (6-5-4) had a high-scoring side this season. The Bonnies had scored multiple goals in eight of its previous 14 games and had only been shut out twice all year.
• Freshman Mikayla Long, a Lewisburg graduate, scored in the 61st minute to help the Lycoming College women’s soccer team pick up a point to stay in a tie for fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings with its school-record sixth draw of the year, 1-1, at Wilkes University in Landmark Conference action.
The Warriors (5-3-6 overall, 1-2-4 Landmark) were the first to capitalize, Long caught up to a cross from first-year Kaitlyn Born, tipping the ball past the keeper for her eighth goal of the year.
Wilkes (3-5-6 overall, 1-3-3 Landmark) tied the game in the 87th minute, as Jordyn Jennings headed in a ball after a Wilkes corner.
Senior Abbey Gerasimoff made three saves for the Warriors and Hanna Landis stopped six for the Colonels, as both teams took 12 shots in the game.
• Junior Jessica Ahart had 11 of the Lycoming College volleyball team’s 36 kills as the hard-hitting offense helped Lycoming clinch a winning season for the first time since 2019 with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-18) win over Penn State-Harrisburg in non-conference action.
The Warriors (13-6 overall) clinched a winning mark for the 10th time in coach Tim McMahon’s 23 years at the helm of the program.
Lycoming had 12 kills in each of the three sets, while limiting the Nittany Lions (8-11 overall) to two seven-kill sets to clinch the win.
