Tri-Town’s run this summer came to an unfortunate end in the state championship game of the Little League intermediate all-star tournament on Friday. Tri-Town dropped its first game, 9-0, to West Side before falling in the if game rematch, 4-1.
The two wins propel West Side to the East Regional tournament in Delaware. The Intermediate (50/70) Little league World series is July 27-Aug. 3 in Livermore, California.
“Man, what a run. To be that close to a state championship was awesome. We played a really good West Side team from West Chester, Pa.,” Tri-Town manager Lyle Huggler said. “They had two really, really good pitchers that shut us down. They are a really nice team and I congratulate them and wish them the best at the next level. I am proud of my boys for making it this far. They are a special group. I got a lot of enjoyment out of coaching them.”
In the second game, Tri-Town collected six hits , but couldn’t quite get enough runs to beat West Side. Kellynn Wool, Kaden Caster, Roman Meckbach, Jameson Smith, Beaux Richmond and Lyle Huggler all collected one hit each for Tri-Town.
West Side led 1-0 thanks to a first-inning single. Jax Duke had a sac-fly for Tri-Town which tied the game in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, West Side reclaimed the lead with a single to centerfield. Tri-Town committed two errors, with both resulting in runs scoring as West Side went ahead and never let Tri-Town rally.
On the mound, Lyle Huggler took the loss as the right-handed pitcher went 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs — two earned — on three hits with seven strikeouts and six walks. Duke led Tri-Town with one run batted in.
In the first game, West Side got on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to two walks and a single down the left-field line for a 3-0 lead. West Side would extend the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to tow home runs, 5-0.
Roman Meckbach threw 4 1/3 innings , allowing seven hits and six runs with five strikeouts and two walks in his relief effort. Kaden Caster took the loss on the mound.
Meckbach and Dristian Dimoff both had a hit each for Tri-Town. Defensively, the East Lycoming all-stars turned a double play in the game and didn’t commit a single error.
West Side’s bats were able to do damage when needed to collect runs despite Tri-Town’s efforts.
