Local roundup: Sockman’s double-double lifts Bucktail girls past Neumann

Eva Sockman played one of her best high school games, going for 18 points and 15 rebounds, while hitting three clutch late foul shots as Bucktail won a thriller at St. John Neumann, 52-47. The second half featured multiple lead changes and was tied throughout the final 14 minutes. Sockman’s three foul shots in the final 20 seconds clinched the win after Haylee Meixel had converted a 3-point play which pulled Neumann within, 49-47.

Kelsie Wagner hit a go-ahead jumper with 1:50 remaining and scored a game-high 19 points, while dealing five assists. Arionna Winkleman scored a career-high 11 points, including the team’s first eight, and added six rebounds. Breanna Nixon had a big game for Neumann, going for 17 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. Meixel also had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds and Kaydance Meixel produced 14 points, five steals and five rebounds, helping Neumann take a third quarter lead after trailing 26-20 at halftime.

Loyalsock clinched its 10th straight 3A playoff berth, as Alaina Dadzie totaled 24 points and 13 rebounds in a 56-13 win against Warrior Run. Jaekairah Harden and Madison Perry both had 11 points and four steals, while Addie Bastian added three steals. Loyalsock (11-5, 5-2 HAC-III) allowed just four first-half points. Alice Hollenbach scored eight points for Warrior Run.

Sullivan County rallied from a seven-point third quarter deficit and surged past Millville, 37-30 as Ansley Baldwin scored 21 points and made eight steals. Baldwin also dealt four assists, while Eva Fresno made eight steals and Lily McCarty scored 10 points with five rebounds. Alana Olson added seven boards as Sullivan (8-9) won for the third time in four games.

Jersey Shore defeated Central Mountain in overtime, 54-46. Avery Depasqua and Kylie Schall each scored 12 points and Marley Lehman added 11 for the Bulldogs.

Central Mountain was led by Camdyn Weaver’s 18-point performance while Morgan Davis and Payton Williams added 10.

Central Columbia scored 31 points in the second quarter en route to a 50-point rout against Montoursville, 76-26. Montoursville was held to single digits in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Emily George scored seven and Marleigh Bainbridge added six.

Lewisburg defeated Milton, 49-33, thanks to a double-double performance of 27 points and 11 rebounds by Teagan Osunde with three assists and three steals. Lauren Schwartz grabbed seven boards and Addy Shedleski had six rebounds and three assists. The Black Panthers were led by Carrie King’s 11 points and Camryn Hoover’s seven.

Maddie Smith scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and Hughesville fought off determined Bloomsburg on the road, 43-27. The Spartans (15-2, 7-0 HAC-III) trailed by four after the first quarter but went on an 11-1 second quarter run to build an 18-12 halftime lead. The Spartans gradually extended that lead throughout the second half. Kendall Hamm scored seven points and the Spartans allowed just six points in the middle quarters.

• North Penn-Mansfield held Northern Potter to single digits all four quarters en route to a 58-22 win in boys basketball. The Tigers had a trio of double-digit scorers with Layne Cummings scoring 14, Colton Pellett scoring 11 and Kevin Clemente-Vazquez scoring 10.

• At the Lewisburg Duals, the host Green Dragons beat Danville (57-10) and CMVT (58-17). Against Danville, Landon Michaels pinned Donovan Sharpe in 22 seconds at 133 pounds and at 139, Nolan Altoft pinned Zaynne Zutell in 1:59.

Against CMVT, the Green Dragons’ Wagner pinned Hunter English in 22 seconds and Brody Wenrich at 160 pinned Matthew Allen in 1:42.

• The Mansfield University women’s basketball team competed in PSAC action, falling to Shippensburg, 83-73. Katie Sheeler led the Mountaineers with 28 points, knocking down 5 of 8 shots from beyond the arc.

Jenna Kasmierski added 11 points, going 2 for 3 from the free-throw line. Shippensburg (2-16, 1-11 PSAC) opened the game on a 9-5 run before Mansfield (2-17, 0-12 PSAC) responded with three consecutive 3-pointers out of a timeout.

Baskets from KJ Gordon, Sheeler and Jenna Burkett gave the Mounties a 14-9 lead with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter.

• The Mansfield men’s basketball team fell to Shippensburg, 97-77, in PSAC action. Sterling Scott led with a double-double recording 25 points and 11 rebounds, as well as four assists.

Darrien Berrios Rivera followed up with 15 points and three rebounds.

Mansfield opened the game strong and stayed within striking distance throughout the first half.

Shippensburg (9-9, 4-7 PSAC) started the exchange as they traded baskets and momentum tight opening 20 minutes.

Scott set the tone early for Mansfield, scoring efficiently in the paint and on the perimeter as the Mounties remained locked in during a back-and-forth first half.

• The Lock Haven women’s track and field team traveled to Bucknell to attend the Gulden Invite, hosted by Bucknell. The Bald Eagles returned to Bucknell for the second time this season after competing in the Riverhawk Invite, as well as the Nittany Lion Open last weekend.

The afternoon was highlighted by multiple personal best efforts and a PSAC qualifying mark by Laurie Thompson.

Laurie Thompson finished seventh in the weight throw, securing a PSAC mark (14.25). Paige Watson secured a personal-best time in the 3,000 meter. Kristen Schellberg (5:43.22) and Emily Black (5:54.04) achieved personal bests in the one mile.

Alannah Irwin gained a personal best, 2:44.93, in the 800. Clarissa Davis finished just outside the top-five in the shot put with a heave of 12.03. Elizabeth Shultz (1:01.55) finished 16th in a deep field in the 400. Khloe Cunningham finished with her personal best mark in the 1,000 (3:36.00).

On the men’s side, LHU had success which was headlined by Eric Zalar, who was named Field Athlete of the Meet, after breaking a program and PSAC record in the weight throw. With a mark of 67 feet, 2 inches, he broke the previous PSCA indoor mark of 66-3 3/4 from 2010 and LHU’s previous mark of 61-8 1/2 by Mark Manno (2013).

Ridge Snyder wins the 800 and secures a PSAC mark (1:57.87). Anden Aitkins (1:58.56) also secures his PSAC mark in the event, finishing fourth. Matt Reniard (8.49) and Jorge Santana (8.65) secured PSAC marks in the 60m hurdles. Myka Simmons achieved another PSAC mark with his 7.01 in the 60, placing him fifth all-time in Lock Haven history.

• The Lock Haven women’s swimming team returned to Zimmerli Pool to host Kutztown on senior day. Kutztown won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference meet, 192-52. Before the meet Lock Haven honored MaryAlice Craig as part of the Senior Day celebration.

Kate MacAlister took second place in the 200 back, finishing in 2:18.77. Gianna Gruska placed second in the 200 breast (2:44.06). In the same event, Veronica Karboski placed third (2:56.27).

Jadyn Oswalt also earned silver in the 500 free with a time of 5:37.18.

The team of Nora Craig, Gruska, MacAlister and Karboski was less than a second away from first place in the 200 medley relay (second, 1:56.22).
