Double trouble: Deitrick and Spangler deliver in big moments as Williamsport downs Liberty

They produced via different styles, but Camron Spangler and Cole Deitrick each created some memorable senior moments Saturday afternoon.

Doing so helped Williamsport earn a statement victory at Millionaire Mountain.

Spangler scorched a two-run, go-ahead fifth inning single and Deitrick threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief as Williamsport defeated four-time defending District 11 Class AAAAAA champion Liberty, 4-2. Deitrick twice left runners on the corners and Spangler’s clutch hit enabled the Shippensburg-bound pitcher to earn the win.

“To hear the whole team cheering and all the fans in the stands cheering, that was great,” Spangler said. “Hopefully, I can do that a few more times.”

“I’m always confident in myself,” Deitrick said. “No matter where base runners are at, I know that I can get the job done.”

His teammates share that belief and that confidence helped Williamsport rally past a team which reached last year’s state semifinals. Liberty also had defeated Williamsport the past two seasons, storming back last year and winning, 13-12.

Spangler and Deitrick helped flipped the script this time as did Deshaun White who blasted a fourth inning ground-rule double before scoring on Deitrick’s sacrifice fly and tying the game, 2-2. Williamsport (6-1) also capped a perfect week, winning its third straight game.

“It’s a good win,” Spangler said. “It shows us we can hang with anybody.”

Trey Damschroder threw 4 2/3 quality innings for Williamsport and also generated the game’s first run in the third inning. After his lead-off double was lost in the sun, Damschroder moved to third on James Naughton’s grounder. Two pitches later, he turned on the jets and sprinted home, using a good slide to score on a wild pitch.

Liberty scored twice in the fourth but White came within a few feet of hitting his fifth home run in the bottom half, setting for the ground rule double which bounced over the left field fence. Zane Rogers moved the shortstop to third and Deitrick’s sacrifice fly scored him. The next inning, Camden March was hit by a pitch, Damschroder walked and Naughton reached on an error, loading the bases and setting the stage for Spangler.

Facing a 1-1 count, Spangler smacked his two-run single the opposite way into right field. March and Damschroder easily scored and Williamsport had a lead it would not relinquish.

“I was looking to attack the first pitch he gave me,” Spangler said. “I was just trying to get a job done anyway I can.”

Deitrick took a similar approach on the mound. He entered with runners on the corners in the fifth inning, inducing a grounder to keep the game tied. Following Spangler’s go-ahead hit, Deitrick again put out a fire and left runners on first and third, getting a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.

Looking extra pumped in the seventh inning, Deitrick overpowered the top three hitters in Liberty’s order, striking out two and sealing victory. He threw well the last two years, but Deitrick added two more pitches to his arsenal throughout a dedicated offseason and now is throwing five effectively. That has enabled the right-hander to surrender just five hits in 10 1/3 innings, while striking out 12.

“I was feeling good. I can throw five pitches, so I feel confident in anything in that situation,” Deitrick said. “I know there are many different ways I can get kids out.”

Williamsport as a whole is showing some variety, proving it can win in different ways. The Millionaires outslugged Shikellamy last Monday, rallying for a 15-10 win. Against Shamokin early this season, it was some excellent base running which helped fan the victory flames.

Saturday, it was about pitching and some timely hitting and defense. The Millionaires, obviously want to cut down on the four errors they made, but also generated some big defensive plays. The most important came when White hustled after an errant throw at second base and unleashed a perfect strike home to catcher Lucas Naughton as the lead runner tried scoring from second.

Naughton barely had to move his glove as he made a quick tag and preserved a 2-2 tie entering the bottom of the fifth.

“Our team is really put together,” Deitrick said. “We have a lot of kids who can do what needs to be done.”

That breeds confidence as does the bond Williamsport shares. The Millionaires are not just winning throughout the season’s first half but having fun. Whether the fun creates winning or vice-versa, Williamsport is eager to keep enjoying the ride and embracing moments which come their way.

“We’ve all grown up together; we’ve all played together,” Deitrick said. “This team is just a bunch of best friends who go out and play baseball.”
