The driver of a speeding car did all he could to elude capture, but in the end, his 2016 Honda Accord crashed into a utility pole, resulting in him being taken to UPMC Williamsport to be treated for a variety of injuries.

New information came to light in the last hour concerning the brief early- morning chase and subsequent crash that occurred Saturday on Oliver Street, city police said.

It all started when the 21-year-old city driver fled The Bar on Market at 341 Market St. about 2:15 a.m. in the Accord, police said.

Police rushed to the business to investigate a report of an “individual who was brandishing a handgun in front of patrons,” according to police.

Investigators allege that man was the driver who crashed and is now hospitalized. His identity will be released when he is formally arraigned on charges related to the incident.

Through information they were receiving, 911 dispatchers were able to provide updates to officers on the driver’s location” after leaving the establishment, police said.

A state trooper spotted the Accord near downtown and activated his cruiser’s emergency lights and siren, but the driver refused to stop, police said.

“The suspect turned off his headlights in an attempt to elude officers, and speeds during the pursuit exceeded 100 mph,” police said.

The driver lost control of his car on Oliver Street, just south of High Street, and crashed, police said.

The man behind the wheel was wearing clothing that matched those worn by the gunman waving the weapon at the patrons, police said. He told people in the bar “You don’t want no smoke,” police said.

A handgun was discovered on the car  floor on the driver’s side, and the suspect admitted it was his.
