18-year-old dead, two others wounded in Williamsport shooting

KAREN VIBERT-KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Police work near the scene at Memorial and Lloyd Streets where three teens were shot Monday afternoon.

An 18-year-old city man was shot to death and two other men were wounded in a shooting that occurred at Memorial Avenue and Lloyd Street, just east of Memorial Park, about 2:50 p.m. Monday, according to city police.

In a telephone conversation about 5 p.m., Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. confirmed the 18-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and never regained consciousness after being shot. The teen was pronounced dead in the emergency room at UPMC Williamsport at 3:10 p.m. Kiessling said. Due to the nature of the investigation, he declined to comment on the extent of the gunshot wounds. The teen’s identity was not expected to be released until late Tuesday. An autopsy will be scheduled later this week in Allentown, Kiessling said.

The gunman remained at large as of Monday night, police Capt. Michael Courter said. He described the suspect as black, an adult male believed to be in his 20s or 30s. No other descriptive details were released.

Anyone with information about the homicide should contact city police or the county coroner’s office.

“This was very scary, and the fact that it happened in broad daylight makes it even scarier,” a nurse who lives near the shooting scene, said. The nurse had just returned home from work when she and her school-age grandchildren heard the gunshots.

“We thought it was fireworks,” since July 4 is just days away, she said. “My grandchildren went outside, but then they came running back inside crying, telling me that someone had been shot,” said the nurse, who called 911 and then went right into action and tried to help the victim who was fatally wounded. Two other people were already performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

“They asked me to hold pressure on his wound, which I did for a few minutes. Then the girl who was giving rescue breaths (to the victim) was really getting worn out, so we switched positions,” said the woman, who has been a nurse for more than 20 years.

More than a dozen law enforcement officers from multiple agencies along with several ambulances rushed to the scene. Several women began arriving and ran toward the scene, yelling a barrage of obscenities at officers who were trying not only to secure the area, but prevent the emotionally-charged crowd from interfering with the care paramedics and city firefighters were giving to the three victims.

The nurse said she believed the two other gunshot victims suffered wounds to their legs. All three were loaded into ambulances and taken to the hospital. Courter confirmed that the two victims the nurse was referring to did not suffer life-threatening injuries and were expected to recover. He said the two surviving victims were believed to between their late teens and early 20s.

When asked if investigators knew what the motive was behind the shooting, Courter said “I can’t comment on that at this point.”

One resident of the block said she had heard a report that there was an argument involving an individual and the gunshot victims minutes before the gunfire erupted. However, that report could not be substantiated Monday night by investigators.

Referring to the violence, a woman who has lived several years in the neighborhood said “This is crazy. I need to get my family out of here. It’s just getting worse and worse every day.”
