Williamsport man faces assault charges

Deandre Bently, 30, of 119 Guinter Ave., has been charged with simple assault and harassment for punching William Overbay in the face in the 100 block of Maynard Street about 5:20 p.m. on July 27, city police alleged in an affidavit.

When officers arrived on the scene, they clearly saw that Overbay suffered “a lip injury that bled profusely,” the affidavit stated.

Overbay said he was backing up his pickup truck to park when another motorist, later identified as Bently, came up behind him at a high rate of speed, startling him, police were told.

When Overbay yelled at him, Bently slammed on his brakes and “reversed back to Overbay’s position. The two began arguing and Bently (got out of his van and) punched Overbay once, causing Overbay to stumble onto his truck,” it was alleged in the affidavit. Bently got back in his vehicle and “pulled off at a high rate of speed,” police said.

When an officer later questioned him, “Bently admitted that there had been an altercation and that the two had been arguing. Bently felt threatened so he struck him,” court records stated.

Charged with simple assault and harassment, Bently failed to appear for his recent preliminary hearing before District Judge Christian Frey so a warrant for his arrest was expected to be issued.
