5 face DUI charges in separate incidents
On Dec. 31, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., state police patrolling in the Route 15 area of South Williamsport observed a gray Chevrolet Silverado with an inoperable brake light and initiated a traffic stop. Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Michael Anthony Chafardon, 40, of Delaware, police detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, court documents state. Chafardon displayed glassy, bloodshot eyes, and failed a standard field sobriety test, according to an affidavit. Chafardon was taken into custody for DUI, with tests revealing his BAC to be 0.13. He was released on $5,000 bail, and issued a summons.
In another case, on Feb. 16, at 1 a.m., state police witnessed a vehicle traveling 72 mph in a posted 55 mph hour zone eastbound on I-80. Upon stopping the vehicle, a white Chevrolet Malibu, a strong odor of alcohol was detected from the vehicle, police allege. The driver, Patrick Andrew Motto, 49, of Danville, admitted to consuming alcohol prior to operating the car.
Motto’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and he failed a field sobriety test, as well as a primary breath test, according to court documents. Test results showed Motto to have a BAC of 0.07. He was charged with DUI and two summary offenses, waived a preliminary hearing, and was released on $5,000 bail.
After several reports of a gray Jeep Compass driving erratically, police located the driver, Patrick John Callahan, 65, of 584 Lower Barbourss Road, at Creekside Country Market in Upper Fairfield Township on Dec. 3, 2022, at approximately 9:01 a.m. Callahan showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test, court documents state. A blood test revealed an assortment of drugs, including cocaine, in Callahan’s system, according to an affidavit. Callahan was charged with DUI and two summary offenses, waived a preliminary hearing, and was released on $5,000 bail.
In another case, on Dec. 17, 2022, at approximately 2:30 a.m., state police observed a blue Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound on East Third Street in the city, at a speed of 47 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. Police also took note of a broken driver’s side taillight. Upon running the license plate, it was discovered that the registration had expired in April.
Upon initiating a traffic stop, police detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver, Zavon Michael Harris, 34, of 303 Grimesville Road, admitted to consuming alcohol prior to operating the vehicle, and had glassy, bloodshot eyes, according to court documents. Harris’ license was also currently under suspension due to prior DUI related charges.
While carrying out a failed field sobriety test, police detected the odor of alcohol on the breath of Harris. Harris refused a police request for a preliminary breath test, and was placed under arrest for DUI, according to an affidavit. A blood test revealed his BAC to be 0.13. He was charged with DUI and five summary offenses, waived his preliminary hearing, and was released on $5,000 bail.
In another case, on Feb. 19, at approximately 2:30 a.m., state police stopped a 2007 Honda CRV traveling 69 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. Upon approaching the vehicle, police detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from within, court documents said. The driver, Victor Angelo Mumtaz, 28, of 1448 W. Fourth St., had glassy, bloodshot eyes and admitted to having consumed alcohol prior to driving. Further investigation showed that Mumtaz’s license was currently under suspension due to a previous DUI conviction.
Mumtaz failed a field sobriety test, and had a BAC of 0.10. He was charged with DUI, two summary offenses, waived his preliminary hearing, and was released on $5,000 bail.
