Along with crews from the state Bureau of Forestry, volunteer firefighters worked together late into Tuesday night to control a brush fire that is believed to have consumed about 10 areas on a mountain range near Route 15 and Sulphur Springs Road at the South Williamsport-Armstrong Township line, according to fire officials.

The fire was first reported just before 4 p.m. In sweltering heat, firefighters and forestry crews used brush trucks, rakes, portable water packs, all-terrain vehicles and water tankers to surround and contain the fire.

One Loyalsock Township firefighter was brought off the mountain about 6 p.m and taken to UPMC Williamsport to get treated for heat exhaustion.

While all firefighters discontinued their involvement in fighting the fire by 10 p.m , forestry crews remained on the scene overnight and through much of Wednesday monitoring conditions and dousing hotspots.

It is believed the fire may have been sparked by an unattended campfire that was thought to have been out, but rekindled, a fire officer said.
