Hughesville seeks grant for Lycoming County Fair
Hughesville Borough Council at its recent meeting agreed to pursue a state Local Share Account grant for improvements at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds.
Eric Newcomer, who asked council to apply for the LSA grant, said it will go toward further upgrades to the horse show ring.
“What we are really going for is a cover over the arena,” Newcomer said. “We need a municipal sponsor.”
He told council he wants up to $1 million in funding and is approaching area municipalities for support.
Lycoming County Fair Association President Rocky Reed told the Sun-Gazette a roof or cover for the show ring, located near Gate 6, will make it a better venue for spectators for various events held there.
“There are events there that get rained out from time to time,” he said.
In other matters, Reed noted that nuisance flies from fair activities were not a big problem this year.
Borough residents in the past have complained about swarms of flies in the community during and in the weeks following the July fair.
Garbage trash containers as well as farm animals showcased at the fair draw the flies, many of which migrate throughout the community.
Reed said this year the fair changed its manure handling and treatment approaches.
“Whatever you did made a huge difference in the community,” Councilman Dan Gale told Reed.
Council voted to conduct the borough’s annual pickup of leaves from Nov. 4 to Nov. 27.
Council President Andrew Mook advised borough officials to consider introducing some type of regulation regarding driveways.
He noted that property owners over the years have cut street curbs to create the driveways without borough consent. Council agreed to further consider the matter.
Councilman Jerry Daugherty reported that he expects to present the 2025 borough budget at council’s next meeting on Monday, Nov. 11.
