Dumb farmers

I chose the title of my letter, not because I believe that, but I wanted my neighbor farmers and friends to read this letter. Farming is one of the toughest occupations there is. There are so many variables that are hard, or impossible to control that it is tough to be successful. I have tried to be a farmer, but age, health, genetics and Donald Trump are driving me out of the business. The input cost such as fuel, fertilizer, and equipment continue to increase and Trump’s policies are a major factor. The ability to make a profit from sales of grain and beef are also at the whim of a ...

The capital militarized

President Trump’s plans for a 250ft, triumphal Arch have recently expanded and taken on a more ominous tone. Now the President wants the Arch to house “a top-grade military complex.” (NPR, 9/21) It will be “the greatest military complex in the world,” the President boasts, with large numbers of drones and roof-top snipers. (CNN, 9/22) This threatening arsenal would be in addition to the “drone port” he wants to install atop his 90,000 sq. ft. ballroom. Like the Arch, it will hold “missle-bearing unmanned aerial vehicles and armed troops.” According to the AP, ...

Garrity for governor

It was refreshing to see the reader’s letter titled “A wicked ruler brings ruin” in a recent issue pointing out the myriad ruinous policies and costly shenanigans of Josh Shapiro. He’s a real smoothy, which is how he got to be attorney general and then governor. He comes across as the type who would sell dangerous drugs to your kids and grandkids---a real “Mr. Nice Guy.” He could charm the fangs right out of the mouth of a cobra. If the Pennsylvania voters don’t wake up, he will smooth-talk them into letting him stay in the governor’s mansion another miserable four ...

Paying taxes

When it comes to paying taxes, I remember an antidote told by a radio preacher in the 1970’s. It seems that a middle-aged couple came in to see their pastor about a problem they were facing. They said that years ago, when they were first starting out in marriage, they decided to give a 10% tithe to the Church. They recollected that at that time, such a tithe was not very much money, because their income wasn’t very much, but over the years, their income had grown to the point that their tithe was now quite a large sum, and they felt it was becoming a burden on them. The minister sat ...

The Red Scare rises again

First, how many Communist countries are there? None. But, what about countries like Russia, China, Cuba, and North Korea? Well, those countries are all dictatorships. And yet, these countries are the boogie men that Republicans want you to think of when they say Democrats are Communists. Well, becoming more Socialized is not the same as becoming Communist. Shocking, I know. In fact, the countries we could learn from are “socialist wastelands” such as France, Germany, Japan, England, Canada, Spain, and many of the Nordic countries. All these countries have universal ...

Why vote for Shapiro?

As a long time Independent and objective voter I cannot understand why anyone will be voting to reelect Governor Shapiro. He has made it clear that he is going to run for president in 2028, despite knowing, for some time now, that he has virtually no chance of garnering the nomination. Nor will he get the Vice President nomination. He is apparently angling for a Cabinet position and even then only if the Democrats win in 2028. In any case, even now being Governor is not his priority, so why vote to give him another four years which he will likely not fulfill, and in the meantime be ...
