Muncy’s Kaylyn Rice delivers as Indians blank Montgomery in softball

MONTGOMERY — Kaylyn Rice has become one of Muncy’s most productive players. Callie Gentzyel is one of the most unselfish.

Well, actually, you can flip those labels. And they pretty much apply to all the Indians. Still, those two senior leaders again highlighted their positive attributes Thursday as Muncy kept rolling and continued its undefeated season.

Rice delivered two more hits, Gentzyel did all the little things right and Nolah Moyer threw a one-hit shutout as Muncy blanked playoff-bound Montgomery, 10-0 in five innings. Moyer also went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and every starter combined for 13 hits as Muncy (14-0, 10-0 Mid-Penn) again highlighted its depth.

“We line the hits up, we get the hits and it’s nice to see us all finally fall in line to get it done,” Gentzyel said after anchoring the defense at second base, dropping a bunt single and scoring a run. “You look at the girl in front of you, and you think, ”They can hit the ball, I can hit the ball.’ Then the next girl follows that mindset.”

“It’s nice to see everyone getting hits,” Rice said after collecting her third multi-hit performance this week. “They go up to the plate with an ‘I can mindset.’ They’re like, ‘We’re not striking out here.”

Rice has helped personify that mentality and capped a big week in which she went 7 for 9 with two walks, nine runs and four RBIs. She reached base three more times Thursday, ripping singles in her final two at-bats, one which put Muncy up 8-0 in the fourth inning.

A good leader for a District 4 Class AA championship basketball team which reached the state quarterfinals for the first time ever last winter, Rice has translated that success to the field and has hit safely in eight of the last 10 games. She has collected at least two hits eight times. And even if she does not produce a hit, the versatile outfielder still makes an impact.

“It’s just coming to me. I kind of go into the box thinking, ‘I’m not going to be an easy out,'” Rice said. “I just keep telling myself that. I think I’m seeing the ball a lot better, too.”

“I have good kids on this team and Kaylyn is one of the finest young ladies you could ever meet,” Kaylyn has morals, she’s got dedication, a work ethic and she’s sincere. She will do whatever is asked of her and it’s coming through in her play.”

That attitude permeates throughout the dugout and Gentzyel epitomizes it as well. Whether it’s dropping a bunt or moving a runner, Gentzyel is eager to do it. She did both against Muncy, hitting the ball to the right side and scoring a runner during a five-run first inning before dropping a bunt

Gentzyel also preserved Moyer’s no-hitter during the second inning with the defensive play of the game. Mady Dieffenderfer hard grounder ricocheted off Moyer’s glove but Gentzyel alertly charged it, planted her feet and made a snap throw to Addi Gresh at first base which beat Dieffenderfer by a step.

“Even when it’s a minor role and it doesn’t help my batting average when I sacrifice, I like that because it works for the team,” Gentzyel said. “The game isn’t about me and what my batting average is. It’s about what the team is producing and how we’re playing and how I can help. Whatever I need to do to help the team is what I want to do.”

“Callie Gentzyel is a totally different player than last year. She has worked hard and gotten better and her personality is outstanding,” Weaver said. “When you are a positive individual and you don’t look for the negativity in life you’re going to succeed and these young ladies are succeeding.”

So is Montgomery.

The Red Raiders (10-4) have made big strides since starting the season and lost for the first time in seven games. Despite playing without catcher Addi Muhl and having to shuffle the defensive lineup, Montgomery made no errors over the final four innings, Arianna Snyder threw well in her first significant varsity pitching action during that time and Madisyn Miller produced just the second hit against Moyer in the last 36 innings.

Sure, Montgomery wanted the victory, but it showed during its winning streak and against Muncy that it can be a dangerous team in the District 4 Class A playoffs.

“I give the kids credit. We stayed up and didn’t give up. We went up there and took our swings,” Montgomery coach Chris Glenn said. “I’m happy with the way our team is progressing. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t know that we would be in this situation and here we are, qualifying for the playoffs and I think we can play with anyone in our division. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season brings and we’re looking to get better every time.”

Montgomery second baseman Addi Cross put on a defensive show and produced seven assists and/or putouts. That included a highlight-reel catch in which she sprinted into no-man’s land between first base, second and the pitching circle to rob Casey Fry of an infield single.

“Addi had a phenomenal game. She played flawlessly. She’s come a long way since last year and keeps getting better and better,” Glenn said. “I know she wants to play in college and I hope that we can get her there and if she keeps progressing the way she is, I’m sure it will happen.”

Moyer will play at St. Bonaventure next spring and continued showing why, delivering two, two-run singles, while throwing her 10th straight shutout. The left-hander has allowed just three hits during her 45-inning scoreless streak and fanned the final five batters Thursday. She also induced 23 swinging strikes and reached base all four times.

Moyer’s two-run single put Muncy ahead to stay in the top of the first and Leah Vest followed two batters later with an RBI single before Gentzyel hit an RBI grounder. Rice and Gentzyel ignited a third inning rally with consecutive singles and Jailyn Baker continued her surge, scorching a two-run single which made it 7-0. Gresh and Fry hit singles two innings later, completing the run of every starter producing a hit and Moyer made it 10-0 with her two-out, two-run single.

“We’re seeing the ball really well and we’re hitting and I hope we continue to hit because that’s big,” Weaver said. “When you can hit from top to bottom that’s big. They’re all working really hard at it.”
