LHU baseball walks it off on Senior Day, splits twinbill against Slippery Rock

LOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven baseball team battled Slippery Rock on Saturday in the back half of their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division four-game series. The Haven fell in game one 11-8, but bounced back and took game two 5-4. Both games went into extra innings.

Lock Haven celebrated their seniors in between the two games of the doubleheader: Andrew Kramer, Jaxson Pupo, Will Stambaugh, Aiden Starn, Will Langdon, Robert Furino, and student-coach Chase Clifford.

In game one, Lock Haven opened the scoring in the second inning after back-to-back two-out hits from Nick Negola and Tom Rohan scratched across the first run of the afternoon.

The Bald Eagles added on three more in the third after a wild pitch scored one, and RBI knocks by Kellen Jackson and Cayden Robertson pushed their lead to 4-0.

However, The Rock scored five runs, all unearned, in the fifth inning to capture the lead 5-4. Slippery Rock scored three more runs in the seventh to push the lead to 8-4.

In the seventh, Robert Furino singled in a run to cut the lead to three. With two runners on and down to their last strike, Nick Negola sent a three-run homer over the left field wall to tie it up 8-8.

In the eighth inning, Slippery Rock pulled away and scored three more runs for an 11-8 final score.

Andrew Kramer was phenomenal on the mound, going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on five hits, but only one earned run. Kramer also collected three strikeouts in the contest.

In game two, Lock Haven opened the scoring again, this time off of a balk in the first inning. Robertson also hit an RBI-double in the first to stretch a 2-0 lead.

The Rock then cut the lead to 2-1 on a RBI-double in the fifth.

Gardner Fravel was able to reach base via an infield single, and moved a run across thanks to a Slippery Rock miscue, pushing the game to 3-1. Another Rock error allowed another run to come around to score, bringing the lead to 4-1.

Kevin Grenninger was outstanding on the rubber, throwing a quality start. He went six innings, allowed five hits, one run, and struck out six Slippery Rock batters.

In the seventh, Slippery Rock was able to score three runs and tie the game at 4-4.

Southpaw Nate Mostosky (W, 2-0) shut the door for The Haven through his two scoreless innings of work.

In the bottom of the eighth, Negola reached on a two-base error, which brought Robertson to the dish.

Robertson was able to get the bunt down and The Rock threw the ball down the first base line, securing a 5-4 Lock Haven win in thrilling fashion.

The win breaks a 13-game losing skid for The Haven and gives the Bald Eagles their first conference win since a 4-3 victory at Clarion in March.

The split pushed Lock Haven to 6-32 overall and 2-17 in PSAC West play. Slippery Rock goes to 22-15 and 9-11 in division action.

The Bald Eagles will return to action on Tuesday in a scheduled nine-inning contest at Bloomsburg. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
