The man who was killed Tuesday when his Chevrolet HHR compact wagon crashed into a bus on West Fourth Street, just east of Poplar Street, about 5:50 p.m. has been identified as Dermot T. McDonnell, 66, of Daughertys Run Road, Williamsport, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
McDonnell was heading west when he plowed into the back of a stopped River Valley Transit Authority bus, city police said. The bus driver and the two passengers on board were not injured, police said.
McDonnell was not breathing when city firefighters arrived on the scene. They immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him, but he died in the UPMC Williamsport emergency room at 6:34 p.m., Kiessling said. There has yet been no ruling on whether McDonnell may have suffered a medical problem just before the crash, which also remains under investigation.
