Revamped doubles teams help Spartans sweep Loyalsock

HUGHESVILLE — Hughesville boys tennis may have picked up a pair of doubles wins against Loyalsock previously this season while taking the meet 4-1, but Spartans coach Josh Fry still saw room for improvement in the two-on-two.

“I feel like we weren’t having as much success as we would’ve liked to have in our doubles,” Fry said. “I knew our four guys out there are the four guys who should be out there. Maybe just switching up the teams, we’d be able to find a win where we didn’t get a win before.”

Hughesville picked up that extra win behind a revamped doubles lineup. The Spartans swept the Lancers, 5-0 at Hughesville Wednesday.

Trever Rothrock paired up with Reese Moon in first-doubles. The two went toe-to-toe against Loyalsock’s Caleb Shimko and Ryan Cao, the former taking a 6-2 win in the first set before shutting the Lancers’ first duo in the second.

Chase Michael and Nick Turner allowed just one more game win against them against Loyalsock (3-9) in second-doubles. Facing Brendan Kriner and Ian Allen, Michael and Turner took their match, 6-1, 6-2 in favor of the Spartans (8-4).

With a sweep on Hughesville’s back courts, have the Spartans found a new winning formula in their doubles chemistry?

“I think so. I told them that nothing is set in stone quite yet, but as long as we’re seeing some more consistency and some better tennis-playing,” Fry said. “The guys brought up to me, and it was a good point, ‘Coach Fry, we have a winning record, so why change?’ I want to beat the teams that we’ve already lost to … maybe changing things up will help us get a couple wins.

Despite the changes in the lineup, it wasn’t doubles where the Lancers earned their win in the last meeting between the two schools. Mikey Dylina previously lost to Jett Pulizzi, but flipped the script with a pair of 6-3 frames.

“It was an awesome win for Mikey, to come here having lost to Jett before and get the win this time,” Fry said.

Austin McKeon and Jackson Ellis battled to a tiebreaker in the first set in third-singles. After escaping with a 7-6 (7-1) win in the first frame, McKeon ran away with a sweep of the second set.

In second-singles, Mason Thomas took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Logan Hammond. The sweep came without any changes in the one-on-one lineups.

“I’m pretty confident with where our singles players are,” Fry said.

In a meet against Lewisburg prior to Wednesday, Hughesville saw two tie-breakers and a three-setter on the courts, a close match that ultimately was a sweep.

In tune with things being closer on the courts rather than on paper, Fry saw what was uncomfortable in a comfortable win over Loyalsock the first time around. He asked his players to be mindful of the skills they saw and what led to game losses.

“We had a comfortable win last time. We knew coming in there were some close ones (last time), but we came out with a win,” Fry said. “Now that we played these teams before, I ask the guys, ‘Okay, what did these guys do last time that you guys got some losses?'”
