Former LHU standout Marstellar secures spot on World Team

Former Lock Haven University standout Chance Marstellar picked up an enormous win at 79-kilograms over former Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs and secured a spot on the 2023 World Team by winning the series, 2-1, in freestyle competition.

Marsteller beat the former Olympic champion by decision, 8-3, to secure the decisive series match win. Marsteller was a former All-American wrestler with the Bald Eagles.

The contests were best of three series.

The former Lock Haven standout held a 3-2 lead in the first match, but Burroughs’ corner challenged by throwing the challenge brick. According to FloArena, officials reviewed the final 20 seconds of the match and saw Marstellar grab Burroughs’ singlet, which resulted in Marsteller receiving a caution and Burroughs earning a point to take the lead and ensuing win on criteria.

In the second round, Marsteller responded with a close 5-4 win to tie the series at 1-1 and go into a huge third round with a World Team spot on the line.

Numerous wrestlers with Penn State ties competed in the Final X competition as well.

Nick Lee (65 kilograms), Zain Retherford (70 kilograms), and David Taylor (86 kilograms) all went 2-0 in the best-of-three series at their respective weights to make the World Team.

At 65 kilograms, Nick Lee defeated Spartan Combat RTC’s Yianni Diakomihalis of New York, 7-6, in the first round. Zain Retherford picked up an 11-2 major decision over Pennsylvania RTC’s Tyler Berger in the first round and won 4-3 in the second round. At 86 kilograms, David Taylor defeated former Penn Stater Aaron Brooks by decision, 6-0, in the first round and 5-4 in the second.

Kyle Snyder earned a win over J’den Cox of Cliff Keen WC.
