South grad Shay leads Lycoming against Wilkes in baseball

WILKES-BARRE — Sophomore second baseman Kaden Shay, a South Williamsport graduate, swatted three hits and drove in a run to lead the Lycoming College baseball team, which fell, 11-4, in a Landmark Conference contest at league-leading Wilkes University on Tuesday at Bruggesworth Field.

Wilkes (18-11, 13-3 Landmark) remained atop the conference with their win, despite Lycoming (15-18,  8-12) outhitting the Colonels 10-9.

Wilkes took the early lead on an Andres Cruz RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Lycoming responded with a game-tying RBI knock from sophomore Tyler Wetzel, a Hughesville graduate, in the second. Two innings later, the Warriors took the lead when Shay swatted his second hit, an RBI single, to put Lycoming in front, 2-1.

However, the Colonels loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, kicking off a four-run rally that was capped by Jack Mathis’ two-run single, lifting Wilkes to a 5-2 edge.

Lycoming made a late push in the seventh, as Shay led off with his third hit of the day, moved to second on a walk, then scored on an RBI single from senior Sean Perkins to close the gap to two runs.

Wilkes answered with a pair of runs in the seventh, then scored four more in the eighth. The Warriors scored once in the ninth on an RBI single from senior Kai Foster.

Shay finished 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored to lead Lycoming.

Wilkes was led by a three-hit, two-RBI from Jack Mathis, as well as a three-run triple from Jake Miller.

The Warriors will be back in action with a doubleheader against Moravian University on Saturday, April 18 from Gillespie Field in Bethlehem. First pitch is schedule for noon.
