‘Marble and Granite’ continuing full slate of projects
A co-owner of Susquehanna Marble and Granite cut under the surface of the business to offer readers a view at what makes the Montoursville business stand out.
Marble and Granite, owned by the Spangler family, specializes in providing countertops for residential kitchens and bathrooms.
However, Marble and Granite also provides fireplaces and outdoor kitchens to its customers. Finally, it subcontracts tile and luxury vinyl tile flooring for projects.
“We opened in 2007 and just wanted to do a couple kitchens a week,” Bob Spangler Jr. said.
Now, the shop slates 12-15 kitchen projects a week, and completes 500-600 projects in a single year–all with 16 employees.
Bob Spangler Jr., one of the owners of the business, explained how the process works.
“Normally, it starts with plans from the customer,” Spangler said. “The customer physically comes in and walks through our yard of 400 slabs of different granite.”
“Once they narrow it down, we take a deposit and get them on the schedule,” Spangler said.
Marble and Granite has a turnaround of about one week from template to installation. The business creates all the elements in-house, while workers install the rest of it.
That process begins with cutting big slabs out and then fine-tuning them with Marble and Granite’s digital tools in its workshop, Spangler said.
Spangler said because a lot of new homes are being built right now, 60 percent of Marble and Granite’s workload is remodeling while 40 percent makes up new constructions.
Spangler highlighted the importance of a personal interaction in selecting surfaces with customers.
“We try to really educate our customers when they walk in the door. A lot of people see it on TV, they know they want it but they don’t know what it is,” Spangler said. “Our sales crew really tries to educate the customer–the do’s and don’ts of the product, to really have an element of customer service and education.”
Spangler said the pandemic made customer interaction a little more difficult. Extra arrangements need to be made to bring customers into Marble and Granite’s showrooms, while workers need to take extra precautions to keep themselves and others safe.
Marble and Granite is held together by a core team of knowledgeable staff, according to Spangler. Bob Spangler Sr. and John Heist, the group’s templater, bring 25 years of experience to the business. Meanwhile, Bob Spangler Jr. and Chris Spangler have 22 years in the industry.
“We just try to make it a very good experience for the customer. We want them to come in, have a good experience, refer their friends and refer their neighbors,” Spangler said.
