Milheims chasing history with each other

For about 10 or so minutes, Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim sat alone as Warrior Run’s all-time single seasons win holder with 45 after falling in the 139-pound final to top-ranked Anthony Evanitsky of Wyoming Area.
A weight later at 145, Reagan watched his brother Kaden compete. And just like that, Reagan now had a familiar face sharing the record with him in Kade.
Kaden decisioned Benton’s Chase Burke, ranked sixth in the state, to win the 145-pound title and it gave him his 45th win of the season.
Now, both brothers go into the state meet with a little more than just medals at stake as the two will chase the single-season win mark.
“I can’t even wrap my head around it,” Warrior Run coach Jeremy Betz said after the Class AA Northeast Regional tournament wrapped up.
Both Kaden and Reagan will look to extend that already record-setting individual season in Hershey for the state meet.
Reagan will face Cranberry’s Dane Wenner in the Round of 16 at 139 pounds. Kaden will face await the winner of Bellefonte’s Gage Long and Saucon Valley’s Travis Riefenstahl.
Oh yeah, and don’t forget brother Cameron, who’s also having an incredible season with 41 wins. The sophomore will face West Perry’s Nolan Zeigler in the Round of 16.
All three Milheims have been nothing shy of remarkable this year, as each have 41 or more wins.
The Defenders have plenty of other wrestlers with 30 or more wins. Four others in fact in Tyler Ulricih (38), Cole Shupp (32), Isaiah Betz (32) and Samuel Hall (35).
And for Betz, it speaks to the talent that is on Warrior Run’s roster.
“Warrior Run’s had wrestling for 66 years. We’ve had 56 kids (all-time) with 30 wins or more. This year we had seven,” Betz said. “I’m looking at the numbers and it gets overshadowed a little bit, and rightfully so, by the Milheims who all have over 40 wins.”
Looking back at the numbers is tough for Betz to get his mind fully wrapped around. The standard for a quality season used to be 20 wins, if you accomplished that with a tough schedule, that was a standout year. Now Warrior Run has eight kids this year with at least 20 wins.
“I try each week to slow everything down and just look at everything and the numbers. It’s hard in the moment to look at the numbers,” Betz said. “When I sit back and look at the numbers, it blows my mind.”
The Defenders have a total of five wrestlers heading to the state meet. In addition to the Milheims, Warrior Run also has 127-pounder Ulrich, a freshman who is two wins away from reaching 40 this year, and Shupp, a junior who turned some heads at the regional tournaments after defeating Lackawanna Trail’s Robbie Schneider, ranked third in the state.
“We’ve been called a record-breaking season. It’s the most that we had (go to states). Four was the most we had, four three times, we came in and said ‘we got to break that record. We can’t tie it, we got to break it,'” Betz said with a smile. “To do that feels really good. It’s a testament to the work those guys have put in.”
And the Defenders continue putting in the work week after week, match after match, and it’s culminating now with a run at some hardware in Hershey.
