Local roundup: Lewisburg beats Montoursville in girls tennis thanks to win at No. 1 doubles

Montoursville and Lewisburg’s match came down to the No. 1 doubles matchup in a tight contest. Leah Wetzel and Ella Markunas played tough against Montoursville’s Lily Fortin and Ally Witter, earning a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win to secure Lewisburg’s 3-2 win over Montoursville.

“Leah and Ella both played really well being down in the first set, but made adjustments to come back for a first-set win,” Lewisburg coach Sam Harer said. “In the second set was another close one, but they were not afraid to switch their game up.”

Montoursville’s Katelyn Good won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2 over Erin Lowthert and Jill Stone beat Annabelle Jiang 6-3, 6-3, for the Warriors at No. 2 singles.

Lewisburg’s Dayssi Weis won at No. 3 singles against Elsa Kehrer, 6-1, 6-0.

Addy Bower and Josie Gerst won a hard-fought three-set match at No. 2 doubles to highlight Jersey Shoreás 5-0 win against Milton. Bower and Gerst fought back from a set down, taking the final two, 6-0, 6-1.

Jaymison Stellfox and Rahel Hartman won the other doubles match in straight sets while Peyton Dincher, Celia Shemory and Addison Koch all won straight sets singles matches.

Loyalsock also won in impressive fashion, not dropping any games sets in a 4-0 win against Mifflinburg. Anna Hall, Caroline Crawford and Katie Ryder won all but four games in their singles wins. The doubles team of Maddy Weigle and Maggie Hutchinson also won, 6-2, 6-0.

South Williamsport continued its impressive season and is now 11-1 after blanking Towanda, 5-0. Sadie Stahl, Livy Harvey and Emma McLaughlin all won straight sets singles matches with McLaughlin win two hard-fought sets at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-5.

The doubles teams of Olivia Jackson and Emily Holtzapple, as well as Mia McNaul and Sidney Ertel also won their matches in straight sets.

• Kayvan Shams scored two goals, helping South Williamsport stay in the Mid-Penn title hunt, as it defeated Montgomery, 2-1 in boys soccer. Shams scored a goal in both halves off assists from Logan Harris and John Shaffer as South (6-4-1, 5-1) built a 2-0 lead.

Aiden Bitler scored for Montgomery in the 69th minute. Conor Irwin made 12 saves in goal for the Red Raiders.

Konnor Shearer scored twice, opening and closing the game with goals as Muncy defeated Sullivan County, 4-1. All the game’s goals were scored in the second half and Shearer also assisted Bode Hart on a goal which put Muncy ahead, 3-1. James Walters scored off a Patrick Zalonis assist for the second goal and Hart fed Shearer for the game’s last goal.

Isaiah Reibson had a hat trick as Jersey Shore defeated Shamokin, 4-1. The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead at halftime. Dylan Hensler added a goal while DJ Monny had a team-high two assists for Jersey Shore.

Cameron Fishel had eight saves.

After trailing 2-1 with just 18:31 to play in the game, Milton kept pressing and scored two huge goals late to defeat District 4 power Lewisburg, 3-2, in a tight game that handed the Green Dragons their second loss of the year.

Viktor Perymashkin put Lewisburg ahead 1-0 in the first half before Dom Ballo tied it with a goal off an assist from Evan Yoder early in the second half. Isaay Ayres assisted Cohen Hoover to put Lewisburg ahead with just under 19 minutes left.

Joel Langdon tied the game for Milton and Ethan Hamilton scored the go-ahead goal with 7:44 to play as the Black Panthers’ defense held on.

Hughesville fell to Central Columbia, 11-1. The Spartans’ Sam Haddon scored off an assist by Brett Whitmoyer with 27:29 to play to tie the game up, but Central Columbia proceeded to score 10 unanswered goals, including five in the first eight minutes in the second half.

Jarrett Easton recorded 10 saves for the Spartans.

Caden Smith scored twice and had an assist while Micaiah Fitch and Lucas Cuneo each had a goal and assist in Wellsboro’s 6-0 win against Galeton.

The Green Hornets held a 23-1 shots advantage.

“”I am very pleased with the opportunities the boys are creating and the goals they are scoring, but I also want to recognize our back line,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “They have only allowed one shot on goal over the last two games (160 minutes) and with Mitchell (Butler) in goal, we’ve kept two clean sheets.”

• The Muncy girls field hockey team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Midd-West. Though the Indians were able to keep the Mustang offense at bay through much of the outing, things got out of hand in the third and fourth quarter.

Midd-West scored a combined three goals through those periods, which ultimately allowed it to pull away with the victory.

• Junior Haley Schafer bent a direct kick inside the post in the upper 90 for the game’s lone score as the Lycoming College women’s soccer team notched its fourth shutout of the year, 1-0, over King’s College.

Freshman Mikayla Long, a Lewisburg graduate, drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box, setting up Schafer’s 25-yard dart into left corner in the 24th minute.

Mansfield drew at home against the Shepherd, 0-0. Shepherd was held scoreless through 90 minutes. The Mountaineer defense did a great job turning away all 17 shot attempts including seven that were saved by goalie Samantha Merklin.

Lock Haven hosted East Stroudsburg where it fell to the Warriors, 1-0, in a hard-fought defensive battle.

The Warriors scored the game’s only goal in the 65th minute to steal the conference victory.

The Bald Eagles’ defense did everything it could to keep Lock Haven in the game, fighting off a game-high 18 shots and four corners from the Warriors. Jocey Francis recorded the lone shot on goal for Lock Haven.

• Top-ranked Messiah College scored two goals in the first half and that was enough to keep a good effort from the Lycoming College men’s soccer team at bay, as No. 1 Messiah hung on for a 2-0 win in non-conference action.

Messiah held a 20-6 advantage in shots and were awarded 13 free kicks to Lycoming’s 10 to go with five corner kicks to Lycoming’s two. Adam Carter stopped four shots in the shutout for Messiah and senior Nick Wilke stopped six in net for the Warriors.

Lock Haven fell 1-0 on the road at Bloomsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division match.

Bloomsburg scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 23rd minute of action. The Bald Eagles’ best chance came in the 24th minute of the first half, but the Huskies made a team save to defend Neal’s scoring chance.

Seven different Bald Eagles recorded a shot, led by the lone on goal opportunity from Neal.

Penn College’s four-game win sreak was snapped in a 3-2 loss to King’s. Penn College struck off the whistle when Austin Stapleton found his brother, Logan, 14 seconds into the match to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. King’s netted the equalizer in the 18th minute before PCT went ahead 2-1 just before the break.

Jimmy Friedman’s header off of Spencer Price’s free kick found the right side of the net in the 41st minute.

The Monarchs made it 2-2 in the 62nd minute and scored the go-ahead goal when a direct kick was fumbled by the keeper and was deemed to have crossed the plane to make it 3-2.

Senior back Matthew Owusu scored his first career goal, but it was not enough as Bucknell fell 3-1 to Loyola in a Patriot League match.

Milan Miric, Danilo Seglio and Jake Sweeney scored for the Greyhounds, who finished with a 14-8 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Byson goalkeeper Lapworth made four saves before giving way to freshman Rex Alphen, who made his collegiate debut with nine minutes remaining. Van der Walt stopped three shots for Loyola.

• The No. 6 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team started PSAC play on Wednesday afternoon and defeated Mercyhurst behind an offensive onslaught today 4-0.

As a team, the Mounties picked up 36 shots, with nine players registering a shot on goal and five of them earning multiple on the day.

• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team fell to Misericordia University, 9-0. Sophomore Cassandra Conner fell to Kassidy Reedy, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. The Warriors fell to 0-5 overall and Misericordia improved to 2-0.
